Okonomiyaki for lazy people!

I made this post quite a while ago, but forgot about it and found it in my drafts now, hupsistakeikkaa!

This is obviously not the correct Japanese way of making Okonomiyaki, so maybe I should call it okonomiyaki inspired food? Heheh, anyway, I am lazy and the ingredients necessary for cooking Japanese food are not so easily available here, so I just make my own version of this dish. Since it's really easy to make and tastes good I thought I'd share~

Okonomiyaki is sort of like a pizza-pancake kind of deal so I start with a base batter of chopped cabbage, egg, flour and water. After that just add whatever you want basically, meat, vegetables, cheese etc.etc.

In this one I put leek, squash, paprika, baby-corn and cheese~

I don't measure how much of each ingredient, but for one okonomiyaki I would add 1 egg, and then flour and water until it's sort of batter-y.

Fry on low heat for a long time, flip at some point (my cooking descriptions are so detailed and awesome!)

After it's done add okonomiyaki sauce and mayo! I don't have okonomiyaki sauce so I made one out of worchester sauce, ketchup, soy sauce and a little bit of oyster sauce. It doesn't taste completely right, but together with the mayo it does the job (at least for me).

I like baking but I don't like eating cake, so my grandmothers birthday was a good excuse to make cake (she turned 92 this year by the way!) ...actually I mostly just decorated it, but anyway~

It's a regular bløtkake (cream-cake?) with a marzipan "lid".

Decorated with kiwi, blueberries, mango and silver sugar pearls.

The same fruits can also be found in the cream layer inside the cake.

I didn't taste it since I don't like marzipan and am generally pretty sugar-intolerant, but my mum and the other guests said it was good, so let's assume they weren't lying 8-D

Anyone want cake for their birthday please let me know, I need more occasions to bake!

New years resolutions~

I don't usually make new years resolutions, but somehow I felt like any kind of extra motivation might be a good thing in my world of constant procrastination and uncertainty.

1. Stop buying so much crap!

Seriously, I don't need any more... anything! I know it will be difficult to not shop at all, but I really want to make an effort to drastically cut down on randomly buying stuff I don't need.

2. Care less

About things that are out of my control, about stupid details that don't matter, and about people who don't deserve it (I have no idea how to go about that last one, but I'm tired of always being the one who cares the most, so for my own sanity, I need to really try).

3. Improve my Japanese!

I generally feel like I am too stupid to ever learn Japanese properly, but I should at least try to improve as much as my tiny brain can handle... がんばろう！

4. Improve cooking skills

I have no delusions of becoming awesome at cooking, but I want to get better and want to learn to make some awesome vegetarian foods :3

5. As always, try to be a better version of myself

This is self-explanatory, I continuously try to improve so I can possibly hate myself less over time.

These are probably quite "simple" resolutions, but I think it will be hard enough for me, and I now realise I should probably have asked for some self-discipline for christmas 8-D;;

I was in dyreparken (the zoo in kristiansand) this Monday, so here are some pictures of pretty animals~

I saw so many cute animals (much more than are on these pictures), and I had a really good time. Kristiandsand zoo is a really nice zoo, and the animals have lots of space and look like they live good lives, which is so nice to see! Definitely want to go back next summer too if I can~

Food experiment

I tried to make a weird side-dish the other day, baked hollowed out mushrooms stuffed with yummies~

I first removed the stem to make a hole for the fillings

I then added a bit of butter (not a great idea as it leaked, I would recommend skipping the butter, or adding very little), a little bit of chopped up leek and tomato, and then lemon pepper and cheese on top~

put in the oven for a few minutes, and done :3

bon apetit~

To be honest though, I didn't like these, because I don't like mushrooms (I thought I had learned to like them, but I guess only grilled ones! Fail~).

My parents, who do like mushrooms though, said they were really yummy :-)

Next time I'll try to use food I actually like, hehe.

Last friday I went to tattoo convention and glad mat for a bit, it was great fun. I didn't get tattooed as I was hoping for, but I'll get to it eventually. I tried a lot of good food at glad mat and had a nice time with lovely cici anyway <3

I'm sure everyone has heard of the horrible events that took place in Oslo and Utøya this Friday, and I don't really have anything intelligent to say about it, I feel like our whole country is in shock and mourning. I guess I see Norway as still being relatively "innocent", and no one was prepared for something like this to happen in our safe little country.

Since I don't feel like posting any of the things I have waiting to be published, have some pictures of lovely Norwegian cows for now and lets hope Norway doesn't loose it's innocence entirely from this.

Food muffins take two

I tried making food muffins again, and improved the recipe \o/ (in my opinion at least)

Food muffins heidi-muffin style ;D

75g butter (margarine)
10 dl flour (use whichever you want! I used a mix of regular and wholewheat just because that's what we had atm, I want to try and experiment with other more exciting kinds in the future)
1 ts salt
2 ss baking soda
3 dl milk
4 eggs
1 can of chopped tomatoes (I used plain ones, but I would recommend trying ones that have spices added, or maybe adding spice yourself for more flavour)
Corn
Squash
Onion
Cheese and lemon pepper for topping

Obviously what you add of actual food stuff is also basically up to you what you have available or feel like, I'm sure there are plenty of yummy combinations!

Mix all the dry ingredients first and then add egg, milk, and melted butter and mix well. Add canned tomatoes and other food stuff and distribute into muffin forms before putting some ground cheese and lemon pepper on top.

Put in oven at 200 degrees for 15-20 minutes.
This recipe makes about 35 of the small regular sized muffins, it might be a good idea to cut it in half.

They are now residing in my freezer and very convenient to take out and microwave for a quick meal!

I like to think that none of you would actively partake in animal cruelty and that most people just don’t really think that much about their habits when it comes to these things, which is why I wanted to write this post and make more people aware so that we can all change our ways and together, hopefully change the world ;D

First rule, and this should be obvious and very simple, don’t wear fur. Why you ask? Except for the fact that wearing dead animals is not sexy. Do you really want to directly contribute to the torture and death of innocent animals for something you really don’t even need? Correct answer would be no.
First of all let me clarify that I am mainly talking about the animals kept purely for their fur, leather from animals already being slaughtered for meat is a slightly different story (although the meat industry has it’s own issues that I won’t get into here, and I personally try to avoid all fur and leather). The animals kept for fur are more often than not kept under extremely bad living conditions, time after time inspections show distressed animals that are hurt, sick or dead, and this even in Norway where we actually have pretty strict regulations for this sort of thing, imagine the horrors of a Chinese fur farm for example, where they have no rules or regulations and no qualms about skinning cats and dogs alive even (and they are the biggest exporters of fur and probably where the Japanese brands get their fur from, as well as probably a lot of your leather shoes). These are animals not meant for captivity to begin with, they are not supposed to live their whole life at one place let alone in a tiny tiny cage.
To me there really is no argument FOR the fur industry, it’s a luxury product that we do not NEED, and an industry that is impossible to run in an ethical way, so why in hells name should we exploit living beings in the name of “fashion”? It’s animal cruelty, plain and simple, if you wear fur, YOU have blood on your hands.

If you HAVE to wear fur (lol, why would you have to really), buy fake or vintage. But to be honest, I think that to get rid of the fur industry, the whole trend needs to die, so I personally wouldn’t wear that either. I wouldn’t feel comfortable giving the impression of supporting something so grotesque, that’s like the Japanese nazi fashion items, just… don’t.

Second rule; don’t buy products tested on animals. This requires a little more effort, but is easier than you might think.
Surprisingly a few people seem completely oblivious as to how cruel and unnecessary these tests actually are, more than one person has actually said things like “I’m sure the bunny enjoys some shampooing” or similar things. Based on this I feel the need to first explain what actually goes on in case some morons think testing labs are like animal spa’s.
The tests usually consist of rubbing the chemicals on the animals eye, shaving and scraping up their skin then exposing the damaged skin to the chemicals, and forcing the animal to ingest the chemicals or injecting them with it. These are all obviously very painful tests, and test-animals live their whole lives in tiny cages knowing nothing but pain and fear. And for you who thought the animals that are being tested on are “only” mice, think again. Normal test subjects also include rabbits, hamsters, guinea pigs, dogs and cats for example.
There is NO reason to test on animals, and to me it’s sick that we’re still doing it. Animals are not enough alike humans for it to have much merit, but they do however feel pain and emotion much like we do, so basically we are torturing them for no good reason. There are plenty of other alternatives by now, so this needs to stop!
Luckily, at least in Europe, things are changing. More and more companies go cruelty-free, and the EU are working on laws to prohibit all animal testing in the cosmetics industry (although these laws are in danger of being delayed, please sign this petition to prevent this from happening – http://nocruelcosmetics.org/). USA and Asia for example are far behind on this, so if you live there you really need to show you want change! I think in cases like this it does actually matter, and you can make a difference. We as consumers have some power and I think what’s happening in Europe shows that everyone’s combined effort can lead to positive changes.

Here in Europe more and more brands are also labelling their products, either with the BUAV approved bunny mark, or sometimes it will say “this product has not been tested on animals” or something similar on the actual product, which makes it much easier to shop! Otherwise a simple google search of “brand name + animal testing” usually provides you with the information you need.
Also, most brands that are organic/all natural ingredients tend to be cruelty-free (not a firm rule obviously), so it’s a win-win to use these really, better for your body and the world~

Examples of good safe brands that I personally love;

LUSH! is not only cruelty free, but natural, fair-trade, good value for money and generally wonderful! I get everything I can from there, shampoo, soap, face-wash, moisturiser etc. I have only positive things to say about their products, everything is natural and kind to my skin.

Everyday Minerals has great natural mineral make-up. Quality is super, and prices are good. Even international shipping is very reasonable.

Otherwise famous brands like MAC, NARS, Clinique, Decléor, MD formulations and Clarins are safe and have a reputation for being good quality. Cheaper brands that are cruelty free include NYX, Revlon, Isa Dora, GOSH, Simple, E.L.F. and H&M’s own products.

After checking out which brands are safe Feelunique is a good place where you can shop by brand, has good prices and free worldwide delivery!

I realise it might be hard to change everything right away, but at least try little by little to change your ways with the help of these resources, and if you want recommendations for specific products feel free to ask and I will do my best to find alternatives.

You might ask why I focus on these things as opposed to all the other horrible things that take place around the world and it’s obviously because I care about animals more than most things, but also because these things require so little effort for each person, every one of you can contribute to eliminating this problem just by changing your shopping habits. I can’t solve the middle-east conflict, but I can think before I buy beauty products. Start with the small steps you can actually do to change things for the better while trying to figure out the more complicated issues, right?!

branching out with food-muffins

I love making muffins, but I don't like to eat sweet stuff much, so I thought I'd try and make more food-type muffins as opposed to dessert type! This is only my first try, so it didn't turn out perfect, but they were pretty tasty anyway :-)

I used this base recipe and kinda modified it a little bit more to my liking (I will modify even more next time I think).

This is the "base" batter, it looks really gross! xD;

I chopped up squash, onion, paprika and tomato to add to the batter.

As well as LOTS of cheese~

Added a bit more cheese on top as well as some lemon pepper before putting them in the oven.

20 minutes later, they are done~

They tasted pretty good, but I think I will try to alter the recipe a bit more next time, they need to be more moist and airy I think (ideas for how to achieve this? I think it may have been just because I didn't have enough eggs or butter this time), and I didn't particularly like the porridge oats in there, so will try to replace them with something else. In any case I think these are really convenient to make a bunch of and put in the freezer for whenever I want a snack~

I recently read Jake Adelstein's Tokyo Vice and thought I'd write a bit about it.

Sadly I don't read a lot, and often struggle with finishing books, but I had no problem with this one. I am not sure if this means the book is really good, or if I am just overly interested in anything related to Japan (that's not really an "if" is it), so I won't tell everyone to read it since Japan might not be your cup of tea.

In any case, I found it well written (although I guess that is to be expected from an experienced journalist), and engaging. Jake talks about his life from being a student at a Japanese university through landing a job as a journalist for Japan's biggest newspaper, getting mixed up with yakuza and the seedy underworld of Tokyo and desperately trying to make a difference by fighting human-trafficking and other serious problems that are not properly being dealt with by the Japanese police/government.

I found it really easy to read and interesting even when nothing scandalous is happening, his writing is humorous but at the same time he covers serious subjects and reveals a side of Japan most people don't see, and probably don't want to see, with a message to try to help change the future.

You can read more articles by Jake Adelstein on his webpage about Japan Subculture. I can't claim to have read them all, but there are definitely some interesting stuff to be found there too.

I already posted a bunch of photos on facebook, but am making a small post here about it anyway~

A couple of weeks ago I went to Ios, a small island in the cyclades, Greece. It was just one of those cheap package trips, so I didn't know much about the place before I got there, but apparently it's a party island that only has about 1500 people living there permanently, but gets packed with tourists and seasonal workers during the summer months. The season hadn't properly started yet while I was there, so I didn't see much partying, but I can imagine it being a crazy place in the middle of summer.

My hotel was close to mylopotas beach, which was very beautiful, and since it was out of season not crowded at all. Along the beach there were plenty of restaurants and bars (not all open yet though), a great place to relax with yummy greek salad and mythological hellenic beer!

About 1,5 km from the hotel was the only "town" on the island, Chora, or more commonly called Ios Village. It didn't have that much to see or do since it mostly consisted of bars/clubs and tourist shops, but climbing to the top provided a pretty nice view.

I briefly dropped by a rock bar there, because doh, rock bar, had to check. But there were barely any people there, although the bartender girl was really nice and I had a good time anyway.

Mask decoration

I bought a plain mask for the carneval themed party and decorated it to my liking~

This is how it originally looked, this plain mask was only 28kr at Panduro.

First I just painted it black with regular acrylic paint.

Next I glued these small gem-things around the eyes of the mask.

I used tweezers and "glue-dots" to make it easier and avoid sticky mess, I would definitely recommend this product for gluing on tiny annoying things like this (they are tiny dots of glue attached to sheets of paper so you just press the things you want to glue onto them and then lift, taking with it the glue dot and then just stick it to where you want it to stick).

I glued lace on the inside of the mask, just using a regular quick-drying hobby glue.

Then I decided I needed beads on the top part of the mask too.

I bought some cheap fake flowers that I dismantled and cut up so I could use the petals for decorations.

I glued petals on the inside of the mask so they stuck out on both sides.

Somehow I still felt like something was missing, so I just added some other type gem/beads on the top bit, and it's all done!

I am possibly an iceream-o-phile, I don't eat cake or candy or stuff like that much, but I <3 ice cream and since it's almost summer I can eat it all the time without people thinking I am crazy (I have been known to eat ice cream in the snow), hooray for getting fat before bikini-season!

Our national day 17. of May started off in good Stavanger tradition with rain... poor wet flags.

but when we got home from family-gathering they had dried and could be happy again!

This weekend was my good friend Thor's birthday party with a carneval theme. Way too many beers were consumed, but it was all good fun~

I made cakes as usual, bløtkake with strawberries (what is bløtkake in English?)
I used a mix of regular cream and vanilla cream, which was apparently very good (I forgot to taste it myself, so will probably have to make it again sometime).

This was a new experiment trying to combine carrot-cake recipe and muffins recipe. I think it turned out pretty decent, but I failed a bit at making Amalie's cheese-frosting (it tasted good, but looked a bit dodgy).

This started out as an empty old q-tips box, but I decided to prettify it because I am bored a lot.

First I painted the whole thing white. This paint was not ideal as it didn't really cover completely, so will have to look for a different type for potential future projects I think.

Next I glued some black lace around the edge. This glue wasn't really ideal either, a bit too messy.

Beads glued on for decoration~

Then some black ribbon for the lid, and done!

Now what to use it for? Any ideas?

I stole this daily planner/calendar from my mom that she got for free from some place or other (yes I know it's already May), and since it looked really boring I decided to prettify it bit~

It's messy because the paper is thin and the glue was shitty (and I didn't put a lot of effort in it and also generally suck), but oh well~
And yes, those black scribbles are really random, don't ask me what I was thinking.

I generally like customising stuff and trying to be creative, even if it doesn't turn out awesome it's usually still fun to do, and at least you end up with unique and personal things~

Lemmy - the movie

I am not a huge Mötorhead fan or anything, it's good drinking music, but to be honest I've probably only heard the most famous songs. Nonetheless, I had nothing better to do, and people were talking about this movie a lot when I was in Japan, so I decided to watch it anyway (I now realise it's quite old? xD).

What I've seen of Lemmy before was just one really old appearance on Never Mind the Buzzcocks, and to be honest he seemed quite, ehm, dim (maybe he was drunk/high). After watching this movie though, I have a slightly different impression. He definitely seems pretty fucked up by drugs/alcohol/life, and maybe on a different wavelength than most people, which can make him seem a bit disconnected from the rest of the world, but he doesn't seem stupid at all.
He does however seem incredibly strange, but seeing as I like strange people, I found this documentary fascinating! All his weird habits, the people worshipping him, so much music history he has lived through and experienced, it's all quite interesting. He really is a proper gritty-type of rock star as opposed to the spoiled diva kind, which I think is cool. He doesn't seem to care that much about the money, his interests hasn't changed, he still lives in an old cheap apartment filled with all his weird collected stuff, and most importantly, he still keeps creating and playing music, proving that it really is all about the music for him.

The movie is at times actually funny as well, I chuckled quite a few times, not sure if I'm laughing at or with him, but funny nonetheless. He is just such a weird character that it's often rather amusing. He also seems like an easy going and pretty humble guy. Confident, but not at all arrogant, which is probably why he has so many friends in the business praising him in this documentary.

All in all, I found it worth watching, even for someone who is not really a fan of Lemmy but just a fan of rock music in general (although I must admit the movie made a bit of a Lemmy fan).

Today I made vegetable couscous because I've never tried couscous and it looked interesting. Since I am epically bad at cooking I just used a simple recipe from the cookbook we used for home ec. class in junior high school, but it actually turned out pretty good!

I had also for some reason never had chick peas before, they are surprisingly tasty~

Ingredients used: onion, carrot, squash, chick peas, canned tomatoes, paprika, spices + couscous.

Otherwise, this is my usual view when eating dinner lately, pretty~

I recently got my most detailed and time consuming tattoo so far done by the super talented Shu of Genie Tattoo!
It took me 3 sessions to finish it all, so I thought I'd show you the process from start to finish.

I told him my idea, and he came up with this original sketch to work from.

I didn't want it to be quite that angry looking, so we made some slight changes to the sketch and then started with the outline.

Next up was some shading.

And finally more shading and some colour. I am generally not that keen on colour tattoos for myself, but since this is a peacock, I thought some colour was in order, and I love how it turned out with just that splash of colour!

Details~

I am really happy with it, and am now wondering what to get next!

For my birthday we went for super yummy dinner at a Japanese restaurant called Bincho. Food was awesome, and the place was really cosy and very Japanese, I miss Japanese food so much when in Norway!

Florence + the Machine

I have jumped on the bandwagon... love this woman!
I don't generally pay attention to popular music at all, but even I had noticed this artist being talked about A LOT around the internet. I am vary of things that are hyped or very popular (I find when it comes to music, popular more often than not means bad/boring). Lucky for me Florcence and the Machine performed on the latest Saturday Night Live or I probably would never have heard the music and discover I was wrong in this particular case.

I don't like a lot of female vocalists (possibly because it rarely goes well with heavy music), but I love Florence's voice for some reason, it's not grating or annoying, just beautiful and unusual. "Beautiful and unusual" describes the entire woman pretty well actually.

Have been listening through the album "lungs", and so far I like it. I won't pretend to be an expert on music, but I found it slightly more musically deep and complex than regular pop music (probably because "the machine" consists of real musicians and singers), but the music and beat in themselves are not really overly interesting, so what carries it and makes it special is Florence's strong voice. I think this is an example that good pop music does exist, it's just drowning in a sea of shit.

Don't know how long the fascination will last, but am enjoying it while it does I guess!

I love how lush products are natural and cruelty-free, I can feel really safe buying their products. I feel like I am giving my money to good people who are actively trying to make the world (or mostly the beauty industry I guess) a better place. It's all hand made with fair-trade ingredients, and it doesn't hurt that all lush stuff smells divine either of course.

I have only good experiences with lush, and am definitely going back for more. Here are my favourite lush products so far, more lush reviews may show up in the future~

New shampoo bar has done wonders for my hair, or mostly my scalp really. It's super for people with sensitive scalp (mine gets dry and sore from bad shampoo). It smells of cinnamon and makes my hair feel really clean and soft. It has so far lasted me almost 8 months with a good chunk still left, so extremely good value! They have lots of different shampoo bars for different hair-needs so I am sure anyone could find something suitable.

Celestial moisturiser gives lots of moisture and is very kind to my skin. It smells of delicious vanilla and as everything lush it's long lasting and good value for money. I have very dry and sensitive skin so it's difficult to find moisturisers that work for me, and I've tried a lot of different ones over the years, but this is by far the best one so far. A little goes a long way but doesn't feel greasy on my skin, if you have oily skin though, you might want to look at the other creams available.

Dream Cream is amazing! It's super soothing and moisturising and is supposed to have healing properties and be safe for even the most sensitive eczema-prone skin. It's a body-lotion, but I've used it on my face a few times too, and it works really well, calms down redness and makes skin super smooth and soft. I love it for freshly-shaved legs, I find it helps soothe/prevent irritation and makes skin feel sooo soft.

R&B Hair Moisturiser smells so awesome I can't describe it and since you put it in your hair the smell stays with you for a long time. This gets rid of frizz and makes hair smooth and soft, but a little goes a long way, be careful only to use a small amount or your hair may end up looking greasy!

Stepping Stone scrubs your feet squeaky green. It smells really nice (this is becoming redundant to write, haha) and leaves your feet so soft. I didn't feel the need to use it all up at once, and it's easy to break into pieces so it has lasted me several scrubs too.

Lovely Jubblies, according to the lush webpage a "Firming cream for breasts, necks and anywhere that needs a lift". Without going into too much detail I think this cream might actually work. It definitely feels like it makes skin more "firm" somehow, and although the smell is quite strong immediately I think it fades to become really pleasant after a short while. Neck and chest area is supposedly very prone to wrinkle and look old if not taken care of, so I hope this cream is helping me retain my youth a little, haha.

If you are sceptical you can read the customer reviews on each product on their webpage, which I find really useful (yes there are bad ones too, so it's not just mindless praise). All the product links go to the UK site, but at the main page you can check if your country has it's own lush webpage! The UK one ships internationally though if you live in a country deprived of the awesomeness that is lush~

Shining live!

I went to Tribute in Sandes to see these guys last Friday, and it was epic!

(please excuse bad phone-picture)

Tribute is a tiny tiny venue that is mostly a bar with a small stage-like area in one end. This creates for an intimate and intense live experience (and also hearing loss, must buy earplugs for next time). And it's really great to have the opportunity to see a band I really like at a small place like this.

I think it varies a lot whether or not music translates well to a live performance (depends mostly on the skills of the people performing obviously), but these guys brought their music to life really well, and it was so much better than listening to the recorded material! Jørgen Munkeby is wild both on vocals and on saxophone, and they really rocked the room.

Most people were kind of chilling in the background or at their tables, but there was a small group of crazy fans up front headbanging to the music and high-fiving the band between songs. I positioned myself a little behind these fans to get a good view while trying to avoid getting whipped in the face by greasy metal-hair.
They mostly played stuff from their latest album "Blackjazz", which I've talked about before, but there were some older songs that I didn't recognize too, and I picked up their previous album "grindstone" for further listening. I got to hear my favourites "The Madness and the Damage Done" and "Fisheye", as well as an extended cover of "20th century shizoid man" among other things, and it was a slightly short, but powerful and great set.

Generally I am really impressed by their musical skills and energy on stage, and would definitely recommend seeing them live if you ever have the chance!

Paris!

Paris was a lot of fun~ Unfortunately I got sick and so I didn't get to explore as much as I'd have liked, but I still have some more pictures to share, and I can always go back another time for further adventures.

Almost all the buildings in Paris seems to be really old, and often have fancy decorations of some kind, like sculptures, columns, or decorative iron fences/railings, even the normal houses to some extent.

Notre Dame was pretty amazing (and free entrance!). I'm not even remotely religious, but it had a really awe-inspiring atmosphere, and the building itself is of course very impressive.

Versailles

Versailles is kind of overwhelming in it's opulence, and there is so much to take in that it's pretty much impossible to catch all the details. I took a lot of photos though, so I thought I would share the experience (click pictures for larger versions).

While it's all very impressing, I am not generally into all the crazy gold and when I was walking through the castle I couldn't help but think of how ridiculous it sort of is. And no wonder the poor people rebelled against these people who thought having gold in all their rooms was more important than food for everyone.

Pretty much every single room had these sculptures or amazing oil painted ceilings, it's like no corner of this castle could be left plain.

At the moment they are exhibiting art from Japanese artist Takashi Murakami, which means that Versailles has been invaded by plastic sculptures of odd creatures, "superflat flowers" or anime chicks with rocket-boobs. It's bizarre to say the least, and I can't say I see how this fits in with this particular venue. As my Japanese companion so eloquently said "fucking Japanese" xD
Interesting nonetheless though I guess.

The garden was absolutely my favourite, so beautiful, and stretched on forever~

Otherwise I find small things like these more beautiful than the obvious overindulgence, but maybe that makes me strange.

Covers may expose you to music you would otherwise not listen to, or just give a new perspective to a song you already like. Either way I am usually excited about covers from my favourite bands, it can give some understanding of their musical background and what they are inspired by, or I guess in some cases make you wonder about their sanity.
There are a lot of great cover songs out there, these are my favourites that come to mind and that I might dare say are better than the originals!

Apocalytica - In the Hall of the Mountain King
I really like the classical piece to begin with, but this is just a badass version that suits the mood of the song perfectly, and since the metal feel to it fits better with my general taste in music I just love it.

Volbeat - Beyond Hell / Above Heaven

If you know me at all, you know I love Volbeat, so surely it comes as no surprise that I was excited about their new album "Beyond Hell / Above Heaven".

When it's a band you love it's hard not to compare everything they do to previous greatness, but I try to avoid doing that too much because no one can be equally awesome all the time, and just because a previous album might be better than the new one doesn't necessarily mean that the new one is bad!

That being said, I don't think the new album is bad in any way. It still very much has the Volbeat sound, and plenty of great songs. Admittedly I sometimes miss the heavier beats from their earlier days, but Volbeat has really perfected their own unique "rockabilly-metal" that seems to appeal to a wide audience across many genres. It's great to see how much success they have achieved and that more and more people are able to enjoy their music.

There are many great songs on the album, the previously released "A Warriors Call" probably remains my favourite, while "The Mirror and the Ripper", "7 shots", "Magic Zone" and "Thanks" also stand out in my mind after a few listens. It's a varied album while still being consistent, and I still like every single one of their songs, which is pretty impressive after 4 albums.

The last song on the album "Thanks" is dedicated to all the Volbeat fans, which is nice of them. It's a great song too, very catchy and happy. I imagine it would be great live, so I hope they play it in December!

Everyday Minerals - "natural" beauty!

I decided to try out this brand for several good reasons;

- No animal testing (important! I refuse to buy anything that has been tested on animals, as should you)
- All natural ingredients, not harmful for your skin in any way.
- Free samples, and sample sizes for sale so you can test before you buy the bigger jars.
- Overall really good prices and international shipping is very reasonable.

I started with a few samples, but have since been back for more, and will probably continue buying from them in the future (although mineral powder lasts for ages, so might not really need more for a while, haha).

I got a light reflecting concealer and a mineral powder base that gives me near perfect complexion without drying out my skin like foundations tend to do. And it looks really natural! Maybe I can't get that flawless porcelain skin I can achieve with liquid foundation without piling it on, but then again that tends to look pretty fake in good lighting, so it's not really ideal for everyday use. I think it lasts pretty well too, doesn't get dry and flaky or settle into creases so much. Might need touch-ups during the day, I've never tried any make-up that doesn't, but I find this make-up much easier to touch up than a liquid foundation+powder combo. Mineral powder is much easier to put on in the first place really, so it can save you some time on your make-up routine, which is always a good thing.

All the containers has sifters on top, even the small samplers, which is really great as other samples I've tried just come in small plastic boxes with nothing to stop you from spilling the contents everywhere when you open them. The bigger jars have a closable sifter, which is convenient because otherwise the powder tends to gather on top of the sifter and make it messy to use.

I've never really bought a lot of "good" brushes before except for a kabuki from body shop if that counts, so I won't claim that I know a lot about what brushes are the best, but I am really impressed by these anyway. The everyday minerals kabuki is much better than the body shop one in my opinion, and it's only about 1/3 of the price! They also have an eye-kabuki that I really like. I use it with the concealer on the spots that need more coverage (dark circles begone!) and such, and am very pleased. I also bought my first angled brow/liner brush, which for someone who's never used one feels like a make-up revelation, haha. I think I will be investing in more brushes from them in the future.

In conclusion I would really recommend trying this out. You can get a free sample and only pay for the shipping, so not a big loss if you don't like it really~

Fall TV

Fall has arrived and the weather sucks (at least in cold rainy Norway :P), but on a brighter note, all my favourite TV shows are returning to the screen around these times! Here are my top five that I am looking most forward to, in no particular order.

House MD
I've been a fan since the beginning, and I think this is one of the few shows that hasn't declined much in quality over the years. After 6 seasons I am still as excited as ever for every new episode. Hospital shows don't exactly have a habit of being very interesting, but this is not a typical hospital show, so don't let that put you off. House's character really IS the show, and he is so brilliant in himself that whatever other random drama that is going on is not that important. I love some of the other characters too, but mostly because of the way they interact with House (Cuddy and Wilson mainly). I am terribly excited about how the last season left things, and I can't wait to see how this evolves~

Season premiere September 20th.

Fringe
I actually watched the first two seasons of Fringe quite recently, but I was immediately hooked! I love the concept (quite literally science-fiction). I love that it's not "traditional" sci-fi (no space ships or aliens). I love the characters, a female lead that is cool and sexy without getting her tits out all the time and a crazy scientist obsessed with drugs. There are just so many great things about this show. It's really entertaining with lots of little humoristic things mixed in with the "serious" main story. Last season ended with a big plot twist/cliffhanger (as these shows tend to do), so this should be exciting!

Season premiere September 23.

The Big Bang Theory
Everyone's favourite geeks! I don't think I need to explain why I love this show, because who doesn't? It's hilarious, and appeals to my inner geek. Sheldon is the most brilliant character, and is probably the reason why this show is so successful. These guys never fails to bring the lolz, so of course I am looking forward to it's return.

Season premiere September 23.

Qi
(Or Quite Interesting), is the most awesome quiz show ever. The amazing Stephen Fry leads us through a world of (possibly useless) knowledge and the contestants get points for being interesting and have points withdrawn for being obvious. It's funny in that British way that I love, and you can actually learn something from watching.

Related to this there was some epic lolz from a Norwegian tv show (the video has subtitles), which is always funny! (like it wasn't humiliation enough that we have a princess who runs an "angel school" -_-)

Never Mind The Buzzcocks
I love music, so what's better than a pop-quiz where everyone is sarcastic and makes fun of all the shitty music I hate? I laugh myself silly watching this show, British people just have the best sense of humour in the world. I miss Simon Amstell and Bill Bailey, but am hoping the new season will have some interesting guest hosts, and be entertaining even without them.

Never Mind the Buzzcocks should be back sometime in October.

Shining - Blackjazz

I recently "discovered" the Norwegian band Shining and am pretty excited about them! They've actually been around for quite a while, so I'm just really late to the party, but better late than never, right?

Apparently these guys started out playing jazz, but has evolved into something experimental with influences from progressive metal, classical music and of course still jazz. The title of their newest album "Blackjazz" is meant to describe their sound, which I would classify as heavy and progressive in an innovative and interesting way. Basically, pretty strange, but also really cool :P

The album starts off really well and I was immediately hooked to their heavy and atypical sense of rhythm. Personally I think the first part of the album is the strongest, but that may be because those are the heaviest and most metal influenced tracks. I am not generally a fan of jazz, so the more jazz-sounding pieces tend to interest me less. The songs that immediately got stuck in my head were actually the first two "The Madness and the Damage Done pt.1" and "Fisheye". They both have beats that are "catchy" (not in the bad way!), and I guess that's why they have chosen "Fisheye" as the first single from the album. That being said though, I like the album as a whole too, and often some songs take longer than others to "discover", so I am hoping this album still has some "growing on me" to do yet.

I am always happy to find new music that interests me as it has become a rare occasion for me to be really impressed by a new band. Lucky for me these guys have a live coming up at Tribute in November which I am planning to attend (as should you if you live in the area!), so a live report is not unlikely~

So apparently I have decided to try my hand at this blog-thing. I am not entirely sure what my blog will be about, but generally what interests me at the moment I guess. Music recommendations/reviews, live reports, travel, fashion (in my own retarded way), and random topics that concern me seems likely, but I'll just see what comes to mind as I go along ;D
